Our partners...

Minwaawshin Lodge's partners for the Métis Youth Project are the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and the Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council.

Out of a total population of 78,908 in the Sault as of 2001, 2,040 are Métis. Métis youth have taken an active leadership role in educating their communities about Métis rights, culture and history. For more information, go to the “Links” section on this website.

The MNO works with Métis citizens to promote self-government and to protect their rights. An example of a recent important success won by Steve and Roddy Powley of Sault Ste. Marie on behalf of Métis people is the right to hunt protected under the Canadian constitution.

Our project...

The Healthy Relationships Peer Education Project, created by Métis youth during the March Break Leadership Training Program, is a mini-documentary and series of info-mercials/commercials about Métis youth issues, as well as a Métis Youth Newsletter and Website.

Under the creative guidance of Youth Coach Joni Labbe, Métis youth spent the summer writing newsletter articles, conducting youth workshops on healthy relationships and leadership and creating a graffiti wall. They also attended youth camps to practice wilderness camping skills and share their thoughts on cultural teachings about healthy relationships.
